Verdun France - Fort de Douaumont The German Cemetery
After the Germans captured the fort early in the Battle of Verdun, they were secure inside the fort and the French attempted many times to recapture it. However, some Germans were using explosives from grenades to boil coffee and the fire escaped into munitions. This caused a huge explosion and over 600 Germans were killed. Rather than recover the bodies the Germans walled off that section of the fort and the German Cemetery is at the wall.
It is really lonely, damp and spooky inside the fort. There are many interconnecting corridors and levels and it is very easy to become disoriented. |
