Somme France - Thiepval Memorial From The Lawn

This is the view one gets of Thiepval Memorial after climbing the slope onto the lawn in front. It is an imposing structure and visible for miles around. The Memorial to the missing was built on the former site of Thiepval Chateau. It was one of the objectives of British troops on 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. The chateau was fought over for almost two months before it was captured on the 26th September 1916.
