Somme France - Lochnagar Mine Crater La Boisselle

This enormous crater near the village of La Boisselle was created by the explosion of a mine on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916. The mine was laid directly under the German Front Line. It destroyed everything near it, but the Germans quickly occupied the rim and it was not captured for another 2 days. It is now preserved as a memorial to those who died in the Somme fighting.
