Messines (Mesen) Belgium - Island of Ireland Peace Park
This panorama was taken from the base of the Round Tower in the Island of Ireland Peace Park just outside Messines. The memorial was opened in 1998 and commemorates Protestant and Catholic Divisions fighting together in the Battle of Messines. Many soldiers of Irish descent also fought in the Australian army.
The German lines were close to this position and the panorama shows the slope which the Anzac troops had to climb towards Messines. Members of the Blue Knights motorcycle club from Ireland were also visiting the memorial. More information on this memorial can be found at Australians on the Western Front and the Great War site.
